Repairs Leave Water With Chlorine Scent
Repairs to an earthquake-damaged tunnel in Los Angeles County left Ventura County residents sniffing their water Thursday.
The repairs led the Metropolitan Water District to shut off its supply of water to Calleguas Municipal Water District, which supplies the water to three-quarters of Ventura County residents.
“We’ve been effectively shut off from state project water supplies,” said Calleguas General Manager Donald R. Kendall.
Instead of its usual MWD water, Calleguas began pumping chlorinated water from the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, Kendall said.
Several residents noticed the chlorine smell in their water and called to ask about it, Kendall said.
Kendall said the odor is harmless and barely detectable.
“You’d have to be really sensitive to notice that,” he said.
The shutdown is expected to continue today, Kendall said.
