LONG BEACH : Panel Asks City to Defer Fee Hike for Businesses
City officials are considering deferring an annual increase in business license fees as part of their effort to make the city more business-friendly.
The suggestion to defer fee increases was presented Tuesday to the City Council by the Long Beach Community Partnership, an advisory board that has made several recommendations over the last three years on business issues. Business license fees have been raised 2% to 3% a year to reflect an increase in the cost of living, officials said.
Although the city is facing a tight budget this year, the proposal may have a good chance of being approved because officials want to attract new business, city spokeswoman Joan Caterino said. A fee increase of 2% to 3% would generate about $140,000 in city income, she estimated.
