Businessman Donates $10,000 to Police

Who: Mike Abdelmuti, owner of Jack’s Surf and Sport on Main Street.

Contribution: Abdelmuti donated $10,000 to the Huntington Beach Police Officers’ Assn. to show his support for local police and the work they do. “I want this to go to the men and women who are out there in the street protecting us,” Abdelmuti said. “Every time they get out of the car, they don’t know whether they are going home again. But they still do it.”

Youth Honored for Big Sisters Work

Who: Costa Mesa resident Shasta Sherwood, 13.

Contribution: Sherwood has received an award honoring her service at Helping Our Mentally Ill Experience Success. Shasta began her volunteer career when she joined the Big Sisters program and was paired with Big Sister Alisa Mayes, who is executive director of HOMES. That nonprofit agency provides transitional housing for the homeless who are mentally ill. “Shasta has been a great help at our fund-raisers and even does clerical work,” Mayes said. The Big Brothers/Big Sisters program pairs children from single-parent families with volunteer adult mentors to provide positive role models. The award Shasta received was part of a joint venture by the Volunteer Center of Orange County, radio station KEZY, California Awards and Lucky stores.

2 Students Recognized for Help at Hospital

Who: Bridget Black and Krista Hollinger, both seniors at Tustin High School

What: Black and Hollinger recently were honored by the Tustin Unified School District for their volunteer work. They have performed more than 1,000 hours of volunteer service at Western Medical Center-Santa Ana.

The Irvine Education Foundation Auxiliary needs volunteers on an “as available” basis to work on fund-raising activities. Volunteers will stuff envelopes, collate materials and pass out programs. Seniors Meals Project Needs Deliverers

Senior Meals and Services in Seal Beach needs volunteers to deliver meals to frail, homebound seniors in the city. Meals are delivered between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., Monday through Friday, to more than 70 seniors in Seal Beach. Most of the recipients live in the Leisure World retirement community.
