THOUSAND OAKS : Member Settles Suit With Tennis Club

Share

A disgruntled tennis player who sued North Ranch Country Club in Thousand Oaks has agreed to a settlement that gives him less money than he initially won in court but spares him the cost of fighting an appeal.

Court records show that the club will pay Bruce Linder $3,000 and relieve him of responsibility for $316 in tennis dues for April and May. As part of the settlement, Linder agreed to turn in his membership card and certificate.

Superior Court Judge Barbara Lane dismissed the lawsuit after reviewing the settlement terms.

Last month, Linder won a small-claims judgment of $4,250, the price he paid in 1990 to join the exclusive private country club. Club officials vowed to appeal the decision, and they refused to discuss Thursday why they settled the case.

In his lawsuit, Linder complained that the club improperly opened its tennis courts to members of the public by offering a series of clinics to anyone who wanted to enroll. He also complained that the club broke its promise to expand the tennis clubhouse.

On Thursday, Linder said he was precluded from discussing the settlement terms but is pleased with the way the case ended.

“We negotiated and they met my price,” he said. “We would have settled for that a long time ago if they had agreed to it.”

He said he now belongs to the Westlake Racquet Club and is happy there.
