A 22-year-old woman stabbed her boyfriend repeatedly Wednesday as he kidnapped her 3-year-old and fled, police said.

The boyfriend, Lewis Maher, 24, was last seen driving north with the child in a blue 1997 Econo Line van, with a California license number of 3SZR544, on the Santa Ana Freeway near the Artesia Freeway, Police Sgt. George Yezbick said.

The child’s mother, Andrea Gannon, was subsequently taken into custody on suspicion of unrelated drug and traffic violations.

Maher and Gannon, both of Lancaster, were on their way to visit a relative about 4 p.m. when he told her that the van in which they were traveling was stolen, Yezbick said.

After visiting the relative’s home on Paularino Avenue, Gannon told Maher that she didn’t want to go home with him, Yezbick said. Maher assaulted the woman and grabbed the boy, he said.

Gannon told police she was scared and took a knife from the house and stabbed the man, but he managed to drive away, Yezbick said.

Police describe Maher as white, 5-feet-11 and about 200 pounds with blond hair and blue eyes.
