Kallick, Levine Set for Maccabiah Games

Marc Kallick, a former track standout for Marina High and UC Irvine, and Darren Levine, who played basketball and volleyball at University High, are scheduled to compete in the Maccabiah Games, which begin July 14-24 in Ramat Gan, Israel.

Kallick won gold, silver and bronze medals in the 4 x 100-meter relay, 110 high hurdles and long jump at the games in 1993. Levine was a member of the 1988 boys’ basketball team that won a gold medal at the Maccabbi Youth Games in Chicago.

Bob Jacobson of Irvine qualified for the USGA Public Links Championships, which start July 14 at Kearney Hill Golf Link in Lexington, Ky.

Jacobson shot five-under-par 139 at Menifee Lakes Golf Club in Menifee. He shot 68 Monday and 71 Tuesday. Bernard Caballero of Pomona was top qualifier at 138.

Steve Jurgensen of Newport Beach shot a eight-under-par 64 at Indian Wells Country Club to take a two-shot lead in the first round of the California State Open.

Joon Lee of Fullerton shared second place with Paul Calabrase of San Diego with 66s.

The Southern California Blues of Dana Point won all of its girls’ and women’s age-group division games to advance to the quarterfinal rounds of the Snickers Cup Far West Youth Soccer Regional Championships in Salt Lake City.

In the under-15 age group, the Blues beat Portland (Ore.) Academy, 4-3. In the under-17 group, the Blues edged Leahi, 4-3. The Blues shut out the Northstars of Alaska, 11-0, in under 18. And the Blues beat North Huntington Beach, 3-2, in under 19.

Other Orange County girls’ teams advancing were the West Orange County Riptides (under 17) and the Irvine Strikers (under 13).

In the boys’ competition, North Huntington Beach and the Irvine Strikers (under 13) advanced.
