Left wing Shayne Corson has ended his contract holdout with the Montreal Canadiens and expects to be in training camp Tuesday. But he warns he may leave again when the regular season begins Oct. 10 if management refuses to sweeten his contract.

Corson has two years remaining on a five-year contract, originally signed with the St. Louis Blues, that pays $1.1 million per season. There was also a $1.25 million signing bonus.

Janni Niinimaa has agreed to a three-year deal with the Edmonton Oilers and is due to arrive at training camp Tuesday. Niinimaa, 23, joined the Oilers last March 24 from Philadelphia in a trade that sent defenseman Dan McGillis and a second-round draft pick (Jason Beckett) to the Flyers. Niinimaa had a goal and eight assists in 11 games with the Oilers. “This is exactly what I was looking for,” Niinimaa said from his home in Finland. “I really enjoyed my time in Edmonton last season and I think we are on the verge of having a great hockey club.” Terms were not disclosed. Niinimaa earned $850,000 last season.

The Washington Capital and Buffalo Sabres met for the first time since last season Eastern Conference finals, which the Capitals won, and there were three fights, 21 penalties and a host of shoving matches in the exhibition game before 5,297 at Norfolk, Va.

The Capitals won, 3-2, as Ken Klee scored his second goal of the game 1:49 into overtime.

The defenseman tied the score 2-2 in the third period on a lazy shot from the blue line. His game-winner, another shot from the blue line, had a bit more power.

Capital goalie Olaf Kolzig, who played minor league hockey in Norfolk, allowed two goals and had 22 saves in two periods.

It was nice of the NHL to visit Hershey, Pa., but the Pittsburgh Penguins and Philadelphia Flyers weren’t too happy about it. Their game was stopped 19 times to allow players to skate around and break up the foggy conditions in the Hersheypark Arena. And the fans didn’t get to see much scoring, as Martin Straka scored his first goal of the preseason at 1:45 of the third period to give the Penguins a 1-0 victory.

J.S. Aubin made 20 saves and Brian Leitza stopped all nine he faced in the third period to combine for the shutout victory for the Penguins.

Both teams were 0 for six on power-play opportunities.
