Gilbert’s Utility Has Included Pitching

Shawn Gilbert, who was called up by the Dodgers earlier this month to help in center field, might also give the Dodgers some help in the bullpen. He played four positions in Albuquerque’s extra-inning victory over New Orleans in April.

The 35-year-old Gilbert, in his 14th year of professional baseball and with his sixth organization, began the game in center, moved to right in the seventh inning and to first base in the ninth. In the 12th, Gilbert took the mound to record two strikeouts and a save.

“I was just looking to get the ball over the plate and get them out,” said Gilbert, who pitched 11 1/3 innings of relief for the Dukes last year.

In the top of the 12th, Gilbert started the Dukes’ game-winning rally with a leadoff single.

Gilbert has also played shortstop, second and third this year. Gilbert has also played in the big leagues with the Mets and Cardinals.

San Antonio players Chin-Feng Chen and Randey Dorame have been selected to represent the world team in the All-Star Futures game of July 9. The world team will play a U.S. minor league all-star team at Turner Field in Atlanta. Chen, an outfielder from Taiwan, is hitting .270 with four home runs and 35 runs batted in. He also has 18 doubles and 15 stolen bases. Dorame, a starting pitcher from Mexico, is 1-1 with a 1.84 earned-run average in two starts.
