2nd Child Dies in Wake of Car Crash
A 5-year-old Fillmore boy who was seriously injured in a car crash Monday has died after being taken off life support systems at a Santa Barbara hospital, officials said.
Bryan Bernal was near death Tuesday but kept alive until about 8:45 p.m. while doctors waited to harvest his organs. They were unable to do so, however, because they couldn’t get parental consent.
The boy’s 2-year-old sister, Marlene, was instantly killed and his mother, Maria, 30, seriously injured in the Monday-afternoon crash on California 126.
Bryan was airlifted to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital because the facility specializes in pediatric trauma cases.
