Coltrane Celebration to Open San Francisco Jazz Festival

SFJazz has announced the lineup for its 19th annual San Francisco Jazz Festival, the West Coast’s most comprehensive collection of jazz events. The program runs from Oct. 24 through Nov. 4 at various locations.

Among the major artists: Kenny Barron and Regina Carter (Oct. 25), Etta James (Oct. 26), Rosemary Clooney (Oct. 27), Don Byron (Oct. 27 and 28), Bobby Short and his Orchestra (Oct. 28), Bill Frisell (Oct. 29), Charlie Haden’s Nocturne (with Gonzalo Rubalcaba and Joe Lovano) (Oct. 31), the Brad Mehldau Trio (Nov. 1), Mary Stallings with the Eric Reed Quartet (Nov. 1), the Dave Brubeck Quartet (Nov. 2), Joanne Brackeen (Nov. 3), Denny Zeitlin (Nov. 4) and the Keith Jarrett Trio (Nov. 4).

Typically, the program also spotlights some special events that give the festival its uniquely adventurous character:

* Oct. 24. A 75th John Coltrane anniversary celebration featuring Tommy Flanagan, McCoy Tyner and Pharoah Sanders.

* Oct. 25. A teaming up of more recent tenor titans David Murray and Odean Pope.

* Oct. 28. Explorations of avant-garde sounds with Terry Riley, Fred Frith and others.

* Oct. 28. A Sunday brunch cruise of San Francisco Bay with New Orleans groups Zydeco Flames and Aux Cajunals.

* Oct. 29. Bill Frisell’s examination of the roots of African and American guitar in a duo with Malian Boubacar Traore.

* Oct. 30. A rare appearance by veteran bassist Vernon Alley.

* Oct. 31. Soul jazz with Reuben Wilson and Grant Green Jr.

* Nov. 2. A salsa dance party with the Isaac Delgado Orchestra.

* Nov. 2. A Grace Cathedral performance by Charles Lloyd and tabla artist Zakir Hussain.

* Nov. 3. A celebration of Rahsaan Roland Kirk featuring James Carter, Steve Turre, Mulgrew Miller and others.

* Nov. 4. A Night at Eddie Condon’s with Dick Hyman, Kenny Davern and Howard Alden.
