For Lakers, It’s Now the Irregular Season
Separate Team Game From Individual Award
It is ridiculous that although Alex Rodriguez had a better all-around season than anyone in the majors, Miguel Tejada took MVP honors simply because he played on a better team. The reason Tejada’s A’s made it to the postseason was because they had the best pitching staff in the American League.
Imagine how truly abysmal the last-place Rangers would have been without A-Rod’s 57 homers and 142 RBIs.
Perhaps in the future, the Baseball Writers Assn. of America could avoid these obvious injustices if, instead of most valuable player, they either called it the Best Player on the Best Team Award or, preferably, the Best Player in the League. In which case, Rodriguez would have won the award hands-down.
