Neuheisel Is Prep Assistant

Rick Neuheisel, fired last month as coach at Washington, started a new job Wednesday with his first practice as a volunteer assistant at Seattle’s Rainier Beach High.

Neuheisel, who will coach quarterbacks, introduced himself to players during warmups, then spoke briefly to reporters but took no questions.

Neuheisel’s attorneys have said they are preparing a lawsuit over his firing.

Ohio State Coach Jim Tressel said tailback Maurice Clarett probably wouldn’t play in the season opener Aug. 30 against Washington because he hasn’t been practicing with the team while questions about his eligibility are resolved.... Georgia defensive end Will Thompson is out for the season after undergoing surgery for a dislocated left ankle.... Iowa linemen Sam Aiello and Derreck Robinson were cited for “conduct detrimental to the team” and suspended for one and two games, respectively, Coach Kirk Ferentz announced.
