Miami of Ohio’s swarming defense forced quarterback Josh Harris to fumble three times Tuesday night, setting up short drives and a 33-10 victory over No. 15 Bowling Green in a Mid-American Conference game at Oxford, Ohio.

Ben Roethlisberger threw for 230 yards and Cal Murray ran for two touchdowns as Miami (8-1, 5-0) took advantage of four turnovers in all.

The RedHawks have won eight in a row since an opening loss at Iowa, positioning themselves to move into the Top 25 for the first time since the end of the 1974 season.

Playing with its highest ranking in school history, Bowling Green (7-2, 4-1) never got rolling and couldn’t overcome a ragged game by Harris.

“Because they’ve got a great quarterback, people stopped talking about their defense,” Harris said of Miami of Ohio. “They’ve got a great defense.”

Miami will be without defensive tackles Orien Harris and Santonio Thomas against 18th-ranked Tennessee on Saturday, and the No. 6 Hurricanes blame one of the injuries on a “cheap shot” by Virginia Tech center Jake Grove.

Harris sprained a l ligament in his right knee and Thomas severely sprained his right ankle.

Miami Coach Larry Coker was upset that Grove blocked Thomas below the knees, from behind, about 10 yards away from the play and after the defender had slowed up.

Coker called the play “more malicious” than when Ohio State linebacker Robert Reynolds jammed his fingers into the throat of Wisconsin quarterback Jim Sorgi and choked him in a game at Wisconsin on Oct. 11.
