Former Tustin Mayor Richard B. Edgar has died of injuries caused when he was struck by a vehicle, police said.

With his family at his side, Edgar, 82, was removed from life support Friday at Western Medical Center-Santa Ana a day after the accident, said Lt. Joe Stickles, a Tustin police spokesman.

Stickles said Edgar was in the crosswalk at Newport Avenue and Main Street in Tustin on Thursday afternoon when a sport utility vehicle driven by Clyde Byron Bronson, 67, of Tustin hit him.

Stickles said Bronson was driving slowly.

“The driver was looking the other way and turning,” Stickles said. “Sadly, Edgar hit his head on the curb when he fell.”

Stickles said Bronson was not charged and the accident remains under investigation.

Edgar served on the City Council for 16 years, retiring in 1992. During his tenure, the city doubled in size through annexations. He also served on the Orange County Transportation Authority and the Orange County Sanitation District.

A memorial service is scheduled for 11 a.m. Thursday at Tustin Presbyterian Church.
