Rescued Sea Lion Sheds Tracking Device
SAN FRANCISCO
A sea lion found flopping on a San Joaquin Valley road last month has slipped a tracking collar.
The 300-pound male was nicknamed Chippy by the California Highway Patrol officers who first responded to the situation. Chippy attracted media attention and thousands of dollars in donations after a gunshot wound to his head was found.
He was released into the ocean March 3 after being treated at the Marine Mammal Center in Sausalito. A satellite-tracking device that had been glued to his back was found Thursday on a dock at San Francisco’ s Pier 39, where he and dozens of other sea lions had been seen sunning.
