Royals’ David DeJesus out for the season

Kansas City Royals outfielder David DeJesus is scheduled to undergo season-ending surgery on his right thumb after further examination showed a complete ligament tear.

Earlier Friday, DeJesus was put on the 15-day disabled list because of what was originally called a sprained right thumb. He suffered the injury and left Thursday’s game against the New York Yankees after crashing into the center-field wall in the third inning while trying to track down a Derek Jeter drive that eventually wound up as an inside-the-park home run.

DeJesus, who has been the subject of trade speculation, batted .318 with five home runs and 37 runs batted in over 91 games this season.

To fill the roster spot, the Royals recalled outfielder Alex Gordon from triple-A Omaha.

The Oakland Athletics and catcher Kurt Suzuki agreed to a contract extension through the 2014 season with a vesting option for 2015.

The San Francisco Chronicle reported that the deal is worth $16.25 million guaranteed but could be worth up to $26 million if the vesting option kicks in. The initial year of the contract also takes the place of Suzuki’s current contract, which was set to end after this season.

Suzuki, who played for Cal State Fullerton, is in his third year as the team’s full-time starting catcher and is batting .257 with 10 homers and 37 RBIs in 68 games this season.

Baltimore Orioles infielder Ty Wigginton was suspended by Major League Baseball for three games for his on-field argument with an umpire in Thursday’s game against Minnesota.

Wigginton appealed the ruling and was in the starting lineup for the second game of the series Friday.

Manager Juan Samuel and pitching coach Rick Kranitz were ejected, along with Wigginton, during the seventh inning of the game and are awaiting word on suspensions and fines for their behavior.
