AFI Fest adds films from Swanberg, Campos, Cronenberg to lineup

New films from Joe Swanberg, Antonio Campos and Brandon Cronenberg will be among the high-profile titles in the AFI Fest’s lineups for its Young Americans and New Auteurs sections. The 26th edition of the festival kicks off Nov. 1 and runs through Nov. 8.

The Young Americans section spotlights up-and-coming U.S. filmmakers in the documentary and fiction realms, while New Auteurs highlights the work of first- and second-time feature filmmakers from around the world. Films in both sections are culled from the festival circuit, coming from places like Sundance, Berlin, South by Southwest, Toronto and Vienna.

Last year’s New Auteurs competition featured the Belgian film “Bullhead,” which would go on to be nominated for the Academy Award for best foreign language film.

This year’s Young Americans selections:

“Pearblossom Highway,” directed by Mike Ott

“Somebody Up There Likes Me,” directed by Robert Byington

“Starlet,” directed by Sean Baker

“Sun Don’t Shine,” directed by Amy Seimetz

“Tchoupitoulas,” directed by Turner Ross and Bill Ross

This year’s New Auteurs selections:

“After Lucia,” directed by Michel Franco, Mexico

“Antiviral,” directed by Brandon Cronenberg, Canada/U.S.

“Clip,” directed by Maja Miloš, Serbia

“Eat Sleep Die,” directed by Gabriela Pichler, Sweden

“Here and There,” directed by Antonio Mendez Esparza, Mexico/Spain/U.S.

“A Hijacking,” directed by Tobiaas Lindholm, Denmark

“In the Fog,” directed by Sergei Loznitsa, Germany/Russia/Belarus/The Netherlands/Latvia

“Not in Tel Aviv,” directed by Nony Geffen, Israel

“Simon Killer,” directed by Antonio Campos, U.S.

The complete festival program will be announced Oct. 11.
