TCA Press Tour: ‘Law & Order’ creator gets hot with ‘Chicago Fire’
Dick Wolf is known primarily for developing the “Law & Order” franchise. But with his series “Chicago Fire,” Wolf is moving from the cool of the courtroom to the heat of infernos fought by dedicated Chicago firefighters.
Just don’t call “Chicago Fire”a procedural that will spotlight weekly fires and rescues. Wolf describes the series as an intense, character-driven drama that is a bit of a throwback to big-scale event TV.
“This is not the fire of the week,” Wolf said during a session about the NBC series at the TCA Press Tour. “It’s a character study about people who do jobs you can’t pay people to do ... it’s a classic adult NBC platinum drama.”
The show salutes what Wolf called “everyday heroes.” Its setting is Chicago Firehouse 51, which includes firefighters, rescue squad and paramedics. The cast includes Lauren German, Jesse Spencer, Eamonn Walker, David Eigenberg, Taylor Kinney, Charlie Barnett and Monica Raymond.
Wolf said the show has little in common with “Rescue Me,” the FX series about New York City firefighters grappling with work and relationships post-9/11.
Said Wolf: “There are no ghosts. It’s from a completely different perspective. That was an internal vision. This is an internal and external vision.”
