Firearms discovered in vehicle at LAX were movie props, roads reopened

Firearms discovered in a pickup truck at Los Angeles International Airport on Friday turned out to be movie-type props used in World War II reenactments, police said.

Entrances to the airport’s lower-level access roads were reopened by 10 a.m. after the Century and Sepulveda boulevard routes were closed as a safety precaution, authorities said.

The driver of the white pickup truck was randomly stopped about 8:30 a.m. at a security checkpoint near the entrance to the airport. That’s when authorities discovered the firearms, said Charles Pannunzio, spokesman for Los Angeles World Airports.

The Los Angeles Police Department’s bomb squad was called in to investigate, he said.

Officers determined that the “weapons’’ found inside the truck were actually collectible items of the type used as movie props of rifles and grenades, and none were operational, Airport police Officer Rob Pedregon told City News Service.

“The gentleman was a memorabilia collector, and all of the items were legally possessed,’’ he said. “No crime was committed.’’
