Amber Alert: father taken into custody, child unharmed, CHP says
A 22-year-old father suspected of fleeing the Bay Area with his 2-week-old son was captured with the infant who was unharmed, the California Highway Patrol said Wednesday evening.
Mesut Guler of Sunnyvale, Calif., who allegedly took off with son Henry Guler-Romero on Tuesday afternoon, was taken into custody by Mexican law enforcement officials near the border with the U.S., authorities told news media organizations.
The case prompted authorities to issue an Amber Alert.
Guler allegedly told the infant’s mother that he was leaving the state with the child after an argument Tuesday afternoon, according to the Sunnyvale Police Department. Guler “has made previous threats to harm himself and the baby,” police officials said in a statement.
Authorities had been eyeing the Mexican border area after receiving reports of possible sightings of Guler’s tan GMC Envoy in the San Diego area.
Sunnyvale police officials said they were able to “ping” Guler’s cellphone Tuesday night. The signals showed his location as being in the San Diego area on the 805 Freeway between Balboa Avenue and California 163, according to the CHP.
CHP Officer Mary Bailey said authorities had received many calls about possible sightings, but none had included the correct mix of plate number, vehicle description and other factors.
