Man fatally shot after leading police on freeway chase
SAN DIEGO - A man was fatally shot Sunday morning by police after a high-speed chase on Interstate 15 from San Diego to Escondido, officials said.
The incident began at 7 a.m. when police tried to stop a pickup truck. Instead of pulling over, the truck raced northward, with the man allegedly holding a gun to the head of the woman who was driving, officials said.
The man reportedly told police dispatchers that he had explosives in the truck.
When the truck left the freeway in Escondido, police opened fire after the man refused to surrender. He was declared dead at the scene; the woman who was driving was taken to a local hospital with unspecified injuries.
