Two male suspects were shot and wounded by Los Angeles police officers in confrontations in the San Fernando Valley and in East Hollywood on Friday night, authorities said.

The first shooting occured about 9:15 p.m. in Sylmar after police tried to stop two men who were walking on a residential street, according to Norma Eisenman, a police spokeswoman.

The men began running, Eisenman said, and as the officers gave chase, “one suspect stopped and pointed what appeared to be a gun at the officers, at which time there was an officer-involved shooting.”

The wounded suspect, whose name has not been released, was transported to a local hospital and is in serious condition. No other details were available pending an investigation, Eisenman said.

Police apprehended the second man a short time later and took him into custody. Eisenman said a gun was found at the scene.

Shortly afterward, about 9:30 p.m., two officers responded to a domestic dispute call involving a man with apparent mental illness at a home near Los Angeles City College. Upon arriving at the house, the officers spoke with “a mother who said her son had assaulted her,” Eisenman said.

The officers confronted the man, who allegedly held a knife. The man approached the offficers and was shot, according to the police account. Eisenman said the wounded man, who was not identified, was taken to a local hospital for surgery. His condition was not known.

The officers involved in both shootings will be given administrative duties while the police department investigates the incidents, Eisenman said.
