Sore shoulder may delay Jered Weaver’s next start

OAKLAND — Jered Weaver was in no mood to discuss his bruised right shoulder on Tuesday, and Manager Mike Scioscia said “nothing has changed” from Monday, when the Angels were in a wait-and-see mode concerning Weaver’s next start.

But it appears more likely that Weaver, who took a Dustin Ackley line drive off his right shoulder Sunday in Seattle, will not pitch against Detroit this weekend and will be pushed back to next week.

Scioscia hoped to maximize the use of his ace in the final month by keeping the right-hander on regular rest despite three off days in September.

That would have enabled Weaver to start against the wild-card-contending Tigers on Friday night, the opener of a three-game series against division-leading Texas at home on Sept. 18, the opener of a three-game series against the Rangers in Texas on Sept. 28 and the regular-season finale in Seattle on Oct. 3.

If the Angels were to clinch a wild-card spot by the last game of the season, Scioscia would have been able to hold back Weaver, who is 16-4 with a 2.86 earned run average, to start the one-game wild-card playoff.

But those plans will probably have to be altered. Weaver hadn’t thrown as of Tuesday, and Scioscia wasn’t sure when Weaver would throw again.

“We want to make sure he’s able to maintain his delivery without adjusting for whatever reasons or stressing any other areas,” Scioscia said. “We’ll get some clarity soon.”

Ervin Santana, C.J. Wilson and Zack Greinke could start on regular rest against Detroit, and Dan Haren could pitch Monday night against the Athletics. Weaver’s spot would come up Tuesday.

If Weaver is not ready, right-hander Jerome Williams or Barry Enright, who was called up from triple-A Tuesday after going 5-1 with a 2.73 ERA in eight starts for Salt Lake, could pitch. Enright was acquired from Arizona in July.

“As much as you want to put the rotation in pen,” Scioscia said, “it’s always in pencil.”

Mental break

Mark Trumbo was not under strict orders to not touch a bat on Tuesday — he took regular batting practice with the team — but he did not hit early and did not start Tuesday night’s game.

Trumbo is hitting .181 (23 for 127) with three homers, 14 runs batted in and 53 strikeouts in his previous 32 games and struck out swinging twice on pitches above his shoulders Monday.

“Right now, Mark is obviously out of sync,” Scioscia said. “He’s a mentally tough kid, but even being mentally tough, there’s some frustration that would creep into anyone’s game when they’re not hitting the way they can.”

Short hops

Mike Trout was named American League rookie of the month for the fourth straight month Tuesday after batting .284 (33 for 116) with seven homers, 19 runs batted in, 26 runs and 11 stolen bases in August games. … Catcher Hank Conger joined the Angels as a September call-up Tuesday. … Class-A Orem (Utah) pitcher Yancarlos Santiago was suspended 25 games without pay for a violation of the minor league drug prevention and treatment program.
