Clippers’ J.J. Redick feels great after partial tear of quadriceps

Shooting guard J.J. Redick said Tuesday an MRI exam this month revealed he had a partial tear of his left quadriceps and not just a bruise.

But Redick said he now felt “great” enough to practice Monday and Tuesday and is available to play Wednesday night in his first exhibition game when the Clippers host the Utah Jazz at Staples Center.

Redick said his injury occurred the first day of training camp in La Jolla. He said he tried to practice two days after the Clippers returned to Los Angeles but was “just dragging my leg.”

So the Clippers shut down Redick.

“It was a partial tear in there, but it was not serious,” Redick said Tuesday before practice. “But it was significant enough that two weeks of rest was the required time off. It wasn’t just a thigh bruise or anything like that.”

Redick said the main thing is now getting back into shape and learning to play with point guard Chris Paul.

Clippers Coach Doc Rivers said he plans on playing Redick “as much as his body can take” against the Jazz.

“There might be some minutes restrictions or something” Wednesday, Redick said. “But there was no residual soreness from yesterday, so I should be a go.”

Matt Barnes, who has been out because of a sore left calf since the team left camp almost three weeks ago, didn’t practice Monday or Tuesday. Rivers said Barnes is hoping to practice by Thursday or Friday.

NBA GMs poll

When NBA.com released its annual general managers’ survey Tuesday, the Clippers got quite a few votes.

Miami was the favorite to win the NBA championship this season with 75.9% of the votes.

The GMs were asked which team would win the Western Conference, and 40% of them picked San Antonio, Oklahoma City got 36% of the votes and the Clippers got 20%.

The Clippers were picked as repeat winners of the Pacific Division with 89.7% of the votes.

Paul was voted the NBA’s best point guard (with 70% of the votes), best passer (47.7%) and best leader (33.3%). Blake Griffin was tied for fourth (6.9%) for the best power forward.

The Clippers were third (10.3%) for best overall off-season moves.

Rivers was considered the second-best NBA coach with 10.3% of the votes, second (31%) for best manager/motivator of people and third (13.8%) for best in-game adjustments. Clippers assistant coach Alvin Gentry (10.7%) was voted the second-best lead assistant. The Clippers were second (17.2%) for the most fun team to watch.
