Boys’ basketball: Alemany hands Loyola defeat in overtime

Share

For only the second time this season, Loyola has been beaten in a basketball game. Alemany (19-9, 8-4) did the honors on Wednesday night in a Mission League regular-season finale, winning in overtime, 75-70.

Gary Chivichyan had 21 points and sophomore Darren Henson added 20 points. Brandon Boyd finished with 15 points and six assists. Thomas Welsh led Loyola with 18 points.

The loss won’t prevent the Cubs (24-2, 10-2) from being selected for the Open Division playoffs, but it will likely change their seeding. The team is having to adjust to the absence of standout point guard Parker Jackson-Cartwright, who left school last week.

Luca Ferrari tied the game in the final seconds with a basket for Notre Dame to send the game into overtime. Ferrari finished with 17 points, including five points in overtime.

De’Anthony Melton led Crespi with 18 points. D.J. Ursery had 16.

In the Tri-Valley League, Oaks Christian defeated Bishop Diego, 90-38. Kenny Smith had 19 points.
