Baseball: Division 1 champion could come from Sunset League

Share

Don’t be surprised if the Southern Section Division 1 champion in baseball comes from the Sunset League this spring. As good as the Trinity and Mission leagues will be, the Sunset is loaded at the top.

Huntington Beach returns all of its top players from a team that knocked off No. 1-seeded Mater Dei last season in the playoffs.

Fountain Valley has picked up an outstanding transfer infielder in Willie Aguilar, a junior from L.A. Cathedral. He’s expected to play second base, because the shortstop is Oregon-bound Daniel Patzlaff.

Los Alamitos has a terrific pitching staff, led by UCLA-bound Jake Nix. Marina made it to last year’s final, and Edison was a young team last season.

And speaking of the Cathedral transfers _ they’re seemingly everywhere. Brian Duenas, last season’s standout sophomore pitcher, is now at Downey Warren, whose coach, Scott Pearson, used to be at Cathedral. Duenas will have to sit out the opening month of the season. Junior outfielder Sergio Robles is another sitout-period player who transferred to Bishop Amat.
