Baseball: Josh Smith throws no-hitter for Etiwanda

In a Baseline League opener on Thursday, Josh Smith of Etiwanda answered the call, throwing a no-hitter with 12 strikeouts in a 3-0 victory over Rancho Cucamonga. Los Osos defeated Alta Loma, 2-1.

Cypress improved to 7-1 with a 5-3 victory over La Palma Kennedy.

In the Western League, All-City catcher Dalton Blumenfeld hit his third home run of the season in Hamilton’s 12-1 win over LACES. Peter Rolon also homered and Ethan Lazar added a three-run blast.

In the Valley Mission League, Gilbert Hernandez threw a complete game, striking out seven, in Granada Hills Kennedy’s 4-2 win over San Fernando. Kennedy improved to 8-2 overall. Marquis Jackson of San Fernando gave up only three hits, but the Tigers committed three errors.

Sylmar defeated Canoga Park, 21-0, in five innings. Jose Arias retired all 15 batters, nine by strikeouts. Victor Ramirez had three hits.

In Arizona, sophomore Kevin Gowdy of Santa Barbara threw a no-hitter in a 2-0 vcitory over Colorado Pine Creek. He struck out nine and walked none. Santa Barbara is 9-3 and Gowdy, a UCLA commit, is one of the best sophomores in Southern California.

Moorpark defeated New Mexico Piedra Vista, 10-0, in five innings, and defeated Colorado Mullen, 5-2. Ryan Swanson had three hits and five RBIs in the first game. Chase Fredrick pitched the Musketeers to victory in the second game, striking out six.

Harvard-Westlake was beaten by Arizona Brophy, 13-8. Brian Ginsberg had three hits.

Sierra Canyon defeated Sisters of Oregon, 6-5, on a three-run double in the seventh by Wes Wright. Jackson Ramey, Jake Fried and Alex Crane had two hits apiece.

In North Carolina, Orange Lutheran was beaten by Florida Bishop Verot, 4-2. Kyle Molnar had three hits and struck out nine in 6 1/3 innings in Aliso Niguel’s 8-1 win over Colorado ThunderRidge.
