Football: Trinity League is seeking five playoff spots

Share

If the Trinity League is the best football league in the state, then why shouldn’t the league receive the two at-large berths for the Pac-5 Division playoffs?

Three Trinity League teams are guaranteed berths. A fourth is almost certain to receive one of the at-large berths. But everything comes down to meeting criteria.

Here’s the criteria that is followed in choosing at-large berths: Head-to-head competition (four points); overall strength of the league (one point); overall win-loss record (one point); strength against common opponents (one point); strength of schedule using overall win-loss record of opponents (two points).

St. John Bosco (8-0, 3-0) looks in, but after that, it’s too unpredictable. Mater Dei (7-1, 2-1), Servite (5-3, 2-1), Orange Lutheran (6-2, 1-2), Santa Margarita (4-4, 1-2) and JSerra (5-3, 0-3) are all fighting for spots.

Fifth place could come down to the JSerra-Santa Margarita game on Nov. 8.

But don’t count out the Serra League third-place team from getting the second at-large berth, especially if Bishop Amat were to finish third, since the Lancers own a win over Santa Margarita.

On the other hand, if Loyola finishes third in the Serra, the Cubs played St. John Bosco much tougher than JSerra and Santa Margarita.

So speculation is pretty worthless until teams are announced on Nov. 10 _ unless you’re a math whiz.
