Clint Dempsey may be coming back to Major League Soccer.
Other rumors say he'll stay in the English Premier League but jump to Everton.
ESPN, citing two sources with the Sounders, said a transfer deal with Tottenham is being finalized. Seattle appeared to lay the groundwork for the transfer by signing Shalrie Joseph to a new contract, opening up a designated player spot in the process. And the Sounders need a midfielder.
However Seattle Coach Sigi Schmid denied Friday that a deal with Dempsey was near.
Meanwhile the British tabloid Metro was reporting that Dempsey was in California to negotiate with Everton, which played Wednesday in San Francisco and is now in Beverly Hills, preparing for Saturday's International Champions Cup match with Real Madrid at Dodger Stadium.
Dempsey, who scored 23 goals for Fulham two years ago, was not a regular at Tottenham last season but played enough minutes to score 12 times in all competition.
Dempsey, 30, played three seasons in MLS for New England before moving to Fulham in 2006. Last year he led the national team with six goals in nine games.
