Jadeveon Clowney is slated as one of the top picks, if not the top pick, in just about every mock NFL draft out there.
But at least one NFL executive isn’t impressed with the South Carolina defensive end. Or so he says ... anonymously.
“He’s spoiled, and he’s lazy,’’ an NFC personnel director told nj.com. “He’s never worked hard a day in his life, now all of a sudden you’re going to give him a bunch of money and expect him to work hard. I don’t see it.’’
He added of Clowney: “Oh, he’s going to be a high pick. Some team will fall in love with him. But wait and see, just wait and see. I just don’t think you can count on him. I’m betting the under on him.’’
But if this person feels so strongly about Clowney, why the anonymity? It’s not like whatever team this unnamed source works for would ever go against the recommendation of such an excellent judge of talent.
So why not put your name out there? Step right up there and say, “We, the ______, will not be selecting Jadeveon Clowney in next month’s draft.” That way, this person can get the thrill of declaring, “I told you so!” if his or her bleak prediction for Clowney’s NFL future comes true.
Here’s why: The person is lying. He or she is hoping that all the other teams with higher picks will decide, “Well, this random personnel director from some other team isn’t impressed with Clowney. Who cares what our guy says. If he’s not good enough some faceless hack, then doggone it he’s not good enough for us. Strike that Clowney kid from our board!”
Sounds ridiculous, but teams supposedly try using such smoke screens all the time leading up to the draft.
Here’s my prediction in Clowney’s case: It’s not going to work.
