Angels Manager Mike Scioscia loses first instant-replay challenge

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz.—The first instant-replay challenge of the spring did not go well for the Angels and Manager Mike Scioscia at Salt River Fields on Monday.

Angels third baseman Luis Jimenez was called out at second on a stolen-base attempt in the top of the second inning against the Arizona Diamondbacks. As Scioscia was arguing with umpire Bill Miller, bench coach Dino Ebel received word via walkie-talkie that the play should be challenged.

Umpires huddled near the first-base dugout with headsets to communicate with a replay official in a television truck. Miller’s call was upheld, and the entire replay process led to a delay of 2 minutes, 31 seconds.

Under Major League Baseball’s new replay rules, which allow a second challenge only if the first one is successful, Scioscia was not allowed to challenge another call in the game.
