Clippers sign Glen Davis to new contract

The Clippers have re-signed free-agent power forward Glen Davis to a one-year contract for the veteran minimum of $1.2 million, according to an NBA official who was not authorized to speak publicly on the matter.

Davis opted out of his contract in June that would have paid him $1.4 million for the 2014-15 season, looking for a bigger payday and longer contract that never came.

But the official said Davis wanted to return to the Clippers “in the best shape” of his six-year career so that the 6-9 forward could help give the team another quality big man
off the bench.

The Clippers also signed center Spencer Hawes to a four-year, $23-million contract earlier this month.

Davis signed with the Clippers on Feb. 24 after the Orlando Magic bought him out of his contract that was paying him $6 million last season and had $6.6 million left on the deal for next season.

Davis played in 23 regular-season games for the Clippers, averaging 4.2 points and 3 rebounds in 13.4 minutes per game. He averaged 3.8 points and 2.8 rebounds in 12.2 minutes for the Clippers during the playoffs.

Davis and Clippers Coach Doc Rivers had a testy exchange of words during a game in Houston in March. Rivers eventually had Davis escorted off the bench and into the team’s locker room before the game was over.

But Davis and Rivers, who were together when the Boston Celtics won the 2008 NBA championship, got past that issue.

Now Davis and Rivers will be back together for another season.
