Report: Tampa Bay Buccaneers will bench quarterback Josh Freeman

The winless Tampa Bay Buccaneers have benched ineffective quarterback Josh Freeman in favor of rookie Mike Glennon for Sunday’s home game against Arizona, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Wednesday.

That’s a reversal from what Coach Greg Schiano said two days earlier when he told reporters Freeman remained the starter.

The 6-foot-6 Glennon was a third-round pick (No. 73) out of North Carolina State. He will become the third rookie quarterback to start this season, joining Buffalo’s EJ Manuel and Geno Smith of the New York Jets.

Freeman had completed just 45.7% of his passes this season -- his career average is 58.2% -- with two touchdowns, three interceptions, and a passer rating of 59.3.

Freeman was a first-round pick in 2009, selected 17th behind Matthew Stafford (No. 1) and Mark Sanchez (No. 5). Although he was a team captain each of the last three seasons, Freeman was not elected one this season, and caused a stir when he slept through the team photo.
