Constantine Maroulis, the pop singer and “American Idol” alumnus, has withdrawn from the world premiere production of “Breaking Through,” a new musical scheduled to debut at the Pasadena Playhouse this fall.

The company said that Maroulis is withdrawing due to “personal matters” and that he will be replaced by Matt Magnusson. The production is still set to open Nov. 1, with previews beginning Oct. 27.

A spokeswoman for the playhouse declined to elaborate on the reasons for Maroulis’ departure when reached by phone.

In recent months, the pop star has had run-ins with the law stemming from his relationship with his girlfriend, Angel Reed. He was reportedly arrested twice in August for allegedly assaulting Reed and later for allegedly violating an order of protection she placed against him.

A court in New Jersey later dismissed the assault charges against Maroulis.

The singer was featured on the fourth season of Fox’s “American Idol,” where he was a finalist. He later starred in the Broadway run of the musical “Rock of Ages,” for which he received a Tony Award nomination.

“Breaking Through” follows a young singer-songwriter (played by Alison Luff) who attempts to find her way in the music business. The musical is being directed by Sheldon Epps, who is the artistic director of the Pasadena Playhouse.
