The five-part series "The Story of the Jews With Simon Schama" is based on the British author's detailed survey of 3,000-plus years of Jewish history. 8 and 9 p.m. KOCE

Vietnam veterans and their service and sacrifices are saluted in the special "Brothers in War" narrated by "Platoon's" Charlie Sheen. 8 p.m. National Geographic Channel

That's "Life." Noted naturalist David Attenborough narrates this new 10-part nature series. 9 p.m. BBC America

The return of "Wild Things With Dominic Monaghan" finds the former "Lost"

WEDNESDAY

Vegas, baby! That's where the "Modern Family" clan is headed in this new episode. Patton Oswalt, Stephen Merchant and "Portlandia's" Fred Armisen guest star. 9 p.m. ABC

Pso long, "Psych." The mystery-comedy starring James Roday and Dule Hill ends after seven seasons, followed by the new special "Psych After Pshow." 9 and 10:07 p.m.

Dr. Livingstone, we presume: The noted 19th-century missionary and explorer is remembered on a new "Secrets of the Dead." 10 p.m. KOCE

"Hot in Cleveland" and "The Soul Man" will be going live, although tape-delayed on the West Coast, for their respective season premieres. 10 and 10:30 p.m. TV Land

Dad on duty: "Law & Order: SVU's" Christopher Meloni plays a put-upon paterfamilias in the new 1990s-set sitcom "Surviving Jack." 9:30 p.m. Fox

Drought? Superstorms? Polar vortices? "Worst Weather Ever?" Climate scientists investigate in this special. 8 and 11 p.m. National Geographic Channel

Broadway baby: Patina Miller, a Tony winner for the recent revival of "Pippin," belts out show tunes, standards and more on a new "Live From Lincoln Center." 9 p.m. KOCE

The teens are angelic, rather than vampiric, in the 2013 fantasy-drama "The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones." With Lily Collins. 9 p.m. Starz

SATURDAY

If you can't stand "The Heat" then get out of Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy's way this hit 2013 action-comedy. 2013. 8 p.m. HBO

We don't usually bother to mention who's hosting "Saturday Night Live." But we're making an exception for a return engagement by Louis C.K.. 11:29 p.m. NBC

The standup special "Hannibal Buress Live From Chicago" features that funny fellow waxing comedic in the Windy City. Midnight Comedy Central
