Fabio cooks, Marcus Samuelsson talks, and beer floats

Food and community: Apolis, a “socially motivated lifestyle brand that empowers communities,” will be hosting a summer speaking series with the first event scheduled June 18. Marcus Samuelsson, author of “Yes, Chef,” and Rohan Anderson, author of “Whole Larder Love,” will be leading a conversation about food and its ability to create community from 7 to 9 p.m. The event, to be held at the Apolis retail space located inside Common Gallery in Downtown L.A., will feature a book signing with the authors, cocktails by Pharmacie and snacks by Free Range LA. Beer floats: McConnell’s Ice Creams and the Surly Goat are teaming up to offer beer floats, available today only at Surly Goat from 6 to 8 p.m. $5 will get you a float off the menu which includes Noble Ale Works Naughty Sauce with vanilla bean ice cream, Anthem Cherry Cider with sweet cream ice cream, Firestone Walker Brewing Co. Velvet Merlin with Turkish coffee ice cream, and Avery Brewing Company White Rascal with dark orange ice cream. “Italian Kitchen”: On Saturday, Fabio Viviani will be demoing recipes for meatballs, pork Milanese and tiramisu from his cookbook “Fabio’s Italian Kitchen” at both Firenze Osteria and Cafe Firenze. The cooking demo and book signing will take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Firenze Osteria and from 4 to 7 p.m. at Cafe Firenze. Tickets cost $75 per person and include a three-course lunch.
