Harvest for the hungry with Food Forward

Share

Oranges, persimmons, grapefruits, apples and even zapotes are what’s on Food Forward‘s agenda to harvest this fall in and around Los Angeles. The volunteer-powered organization gleans locally grown food -- excess fruits and vegetables -- from private homes and public spaces and distributes all of the donations to local food pantries.

With the community’s support and involvement, more than 1 million pounds of produce have been picked to date. Angelenos can pitch in to help feed the hungry by signing up to volunteer at upcoming picks and events. Property owners with an overabundance of fruits and veggies can get involved too, by contacting Food Forward’s fruit donation line.

This weekend’s picks include harvesting oranges in Granada Hills, persimmons in Sherman Oaks and grapefruits in Atwater Village on Saturday.
