Civil Coffee finds a home in Highland Park

Share

Brothers Alex and Alan Morales, both of whom worked at Handsome Coffee Roasters when it started, are set to open Civil Coffee this summer in what is getting to be a highly caffeinated neighborhood of Highland Park.

The shop is on Figueroa Street near Avenue 56, close to where Verve Coffee Roasters and Kindness and Mischief are expected to be opening in the next few months and to where Tierra Mia is already pouring.

After leaving Handsome, the Morales brothers launched Civil Coffee as a mobile coffee bar and took their coffee show on the road, catering in and around L.A. for the last three years.

Their Highland Park brick-and-mortar will give the brothers a permanent place to hang out their coffee shingle. They’ve brought on board Handsome co-founder Tyler Wells as a consulting partner, and the space is being designed by local designer Charisse Cardenas.

No hard date is yet set for Civil Coffee’s opening. When it does open, expect to see seasonal signature drinks, beans from a rotating line of roasters for batch-brewed drip coffee and an espresso menu featuring single origin coffees. A seasonal food menu, provided by local purveyors, is also planned.

With Civil Coffee and the rest of the new cafes opening, and nearby spots such as Antigua Bread that have been pulling shots for the neighborhood for a few years now, this area may become one of the most caffeinated ones in the city.

A coffee crawl down Figueroa -- interspersed, no doubt, with taco-filled rest stops -- is going to be a very fun way to pass a summer day.
