South Korean dinner porn: No nudity, and a lot of food

The word porn implies nudity. Nudity and multiple people. Unless you’re talking about Korean dinner porn. In that case, it’s just a lot of food.

A wave of young, ambitious Korean eaters are hitting Afreeca TV, the South Korean version of YouTube, and they’re broadcasting an odd form of food-focused voyeurism. It involves a fully clothed man or woman sitting at a table with massive amounts of food in front of them.

The Diva, one of Afreeca’s most popular broadcast jockeys (what the Afreeca video stars are called), lets viewers watch her eating rice, giant bowls of noodles, pizza, fried chicken and more. She sits in a small room surrounded by cases of Pepsi and stuffed animals. She proceeds to eat all of the food in front of her, in front of a camera for hours, chewing with her mouth open and talking with her mouth full.

Sometimes a small white dog sits on her lap and receives scraps. Sometimes she dances in her chair. And in every video, there is a blue and white stuffed cat that sits awkwardly in a chair, watching the entire thing.

And Afreeca viewers pay her to watch this. She is not naked. She wears sweaters, shirts, over-sized headbands and hats. and she doesn’t make any gestures that might imply a sexual invitation. But the viewers pay her a sort of virtual currency called Star Balloons to watch her eat and ask her questions during the live stream.

Those Star Balloons can be traded in for real money, with some broadcast jockeys making more than $1,000 for one video.

If you’re scratching your head right now, you’re not the only one. But think about it. Eating a ton of food on camera and calling it porn without having to take your clothes off? Not a bad way to make a living.
