Right-hander Andrew Cashner is going home for a spot in the Texas Rangers’ rotation. A person familiar with the decision told the Associated Press on Friday that the free-agent pitcher and the team had reached an agreement on a $10-million, one-year deal.

That person spoke on condition of anonymity because the deal was pending a physical and wasn’t finalized, and the AL West champions had not made an official announcement.

Cashner, a Texas native who was a first-round draft pick out of Texas Christian in 2008, finished last season with the Miami Marlins after the San Diego Padres traded him July 29. He was 5-11 with a 5.25 ERA in 28 games last season. The 30-year-old Cashner will join a Rangers rotation that’s led by aces Cole Hamels and Yu Darvish, and includes Martin Perez.

After a standout career at TCU, about 20 miles from the Rangers’ ballpark, Cashner was drafted 19th overall by the Cubs in 2008. He made his major league debut two years later with 53 appearances for Chicago. The Cubs traded him to San Diego after the 2011 season, in the deal that sent first baseman Anthony Rizzo to Chicago, and Cashner eventually became a starter for the Padres.

Cashner has a 31-53 record with a 3.89 ERA in 202 career games. He has started 103 of his last 104 games since making five relief appearances for San Diego the first month of the 2013 season.

Texas earlier this month declined its $11-million option for left-handed starter Derek Holland, instead electing a $1.5-million buyout and making him a free agent. The 30-year-old Holland was part of Texas’ only two World Series teams in 2010 and 2011, but missed significant time because of injuries the past three seasons.

The Rangers received right-handed pitcher Tyler Wagner on waiver claim from the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Dodgers and Angels make roster moves

The Dodgers added three players to fill its 40-man roster, and the Angels exchanged four players for four others on their roster. Players on the 40-man roster cannot be selected by other teams in next month’s Rule 5 draft.

The Dodgers selected the contracts of catcher Kyle Farmer and right-handed pitchers Chase De Jong and Jacob Rhame. Farmer, 26, was an All-Star for double-A Tulsa of the Texas League last season; De Jong, 22, was that league’s pitcher of the year; Rhame, 23, had a 1-7 record with seven saves and a 3.29 earned-run average for triple-A Oklahoma City.

The Angels designated right-handed pitchers Abel De Los Santos, Blake Parker and Jose Valdez for assignment, and outrighted infielder Rey Navarro to triple-A Salt Lake. In their place, the Angels added right-handed pitchers Eduardo Paredes, Keynan Middleton and Austin Adams, plus left-hander Nate Smith. De Los Santos and Parker were recently claimed off waivers from other clubs. Middleton, who threw a 102-mph pitch in his first Triple-A appearance last season, and Smith are among the organization’s top prospects and are expected to contribute at the major-league level next year.

The Angels have 25 pitchers on their 40-man roster.
