Los Angeles Clippers look at more draft candidates

They have traveled all over the country to work out for different NBA teams, hoping their bodies hold up under tense moments and that their skills remain sharp throughout the process.

Six more players labored through a pre-draft work out with the Clippers on Thursday, all of them knowing these sessions are coming to an end because the NBA draft is June 23.

For Wayne Selden Jr., a 6-5 shooting guard from Kansas, he will have had 14 total workouts by draft day.

“Sometimes you wake up and don’t really know what city you’re in,” said Selden, who averaged 11 points and three rebounds in three seasons with the Jayhawks. “But you just know what time you have to be at the gym. So it’s just getting it done day by day. You’ve got to take care of your body.”

Selden’s teammate from Kansas, forward Perry Ellis, has only one workout left.

By the time it’s all done, the 6-foot-8 Ellis will have had 11 workouts.

“It’s exhausting, but it’s fun,” said Ellis, who averaged 12.5 points and 5.8 rebounds in four seasons at Kansas. “It’s a fun process because not many people get to go through it. It’s a once in a lifetime thing. I’m just enjoying it and just working hard.”

The Clippers have the 25th and 33rd picks in the draft.

Some of the players on hand Thursday, according to mock drafts, will wind out being picked by teams in the second round.

Isaiah Whitehead, a 6-4 point guard from Seton Hall who expects to have seven total workouts, said he doesn’t pay attention to the draft chatter.

“I hear it, but it really doesn’t make a difference to me,” said Whitehead, who averaged 15.8 points and 4.5 assists in two college seasons.

“Those guys aren’t picking the players. You’ve really just got to keep working, go to these workouts and go all in and hopefully you get picked at a high spot.”
