Racing! Congratulations to Chris Littlemore on winning the NHC

Share

Hello, my name is John Cherwa and welcome back to our horse racing newsletter as the National Horseplayers Championship winds up.

Chris Littlemore, a retired autoworker from Whitby, Ontario (not the Inland Empire but Canada), took the lead after the second round, cruised through the semis and went to the whip a couple times in the finals and won easily. (Sorry for the poor horse racing analogies.)

Littlemore is married and the father of two, with one daughter on an exchange program in Australia.

“I’m paying for their education now, and that’s great,” Littlemore said of the $800,000 grand prize. “It’s life changing for me. It’s ironic as I’ve got a buddy that I retired with from work. He won $1 million two weeks ago [by winning the Canadian lottery]. For me to do this two weeks after that is astonishing.”

Littlemore admits to not having a lot of confidence with Sunday’s card but the abundance of chalk kept anyone from gaining on his substantial lead after the second round.

Here are the final standings:

1. Chris Littlemore, 348.3

2. Keith Fenton, 315.1

3. Garett Skiba, 314

4. Tom Noone, 287.6

5. Stephanie Schmidt, 277.9

6. Scott Carson, 267.8

7. Gloria Kahlden, 262.5

8. David Watts, 260.7

9. John Roe, 260.1

10. Daniel Hart, 256.1

It should be noted that there were two women at the final table, a record.

TVG handicappers

It’s been a while since we’ve done a check-in to see how the TVG pickers are doing on a spot basis. It remains one of the things subscribers enjoy most. Well, the two people that subscribers consistently say they like the most, Simon Bray and Kurt Hoover, both hit one of those pick things, but didn’t have a ton of money to show for it.

Hoover hit the pick five for a profit of $29.45 but gave $24 of it back when his single in ninth in the late pick four didn’t hit. Bray nailed the late pick four for a profit of $31.85.

But the big winner was Brad Free. Why? Because he was betting the more sensible daily double. He hit one for $62.80 at Golden Gate. He gave some of it back with other bets.

Rich Perloff hit the pick 4 at Tampa Bay Downs, but it didn’t pay much and the $30 bet netted a loss of $6.65. Matt Carothers continues to handicap well, but just misses, getting three of four in a pick 4 at Aqueduct and four of five in pick 5 at Gulfstream.

Caton Bredar was on fire at Gulfstream but lost money hitting a pick 4 and got five of six in the Pick 6. The one she missed was the single she had in the 10th race. Her $2.90 to 1 horse lost to a horse that went off at $1.30 to 1.

Here’s how they all finished:

--Free won $46.80 betting Golden Gate, Sunland Park and Turf Paradise.

--Bray won $31.85 betting Santa Anita.

--Hoover won $5.45 betting Santa Anita.

--Perloff lost $6.65 betting Tampa Bay.

--Stan Salter lost $8 betting Laurel Park.

--Joe Kristofek lost $24 betting Fair Grounds.

--Andrew Demsky lost $36 betting Tampa Bay.

--Bredar lost $58.85 betting Gulfstream.

--Carothers lost $96 betting Aqueduct and Gulfstream.

Santa Anita review

War Heroine, running on turf for the first time, went down the 6 ½-furlong hillside course in stalking position, went to the lead on the dirt crossing and proved game down the stretch to win the $75,000 Sweet Life Stakes. The winning margin was a half length.

It was a good day for trainer Peter Miller, who won three races on Sunday.

“I told [jockey] Tyler [Baze] if the speed goes, don’t get involved if you don’t have to,” Miller told Mike Willman of Santa Anita. “She can rate. … She’s fast, but not speed crazy. She had every right to quit and she kept on running.”

Ms Bad Behavior was second, and Out Of The Flames was third. War Heroine paid $11.20, $5.20 and $3.20.
