Ex-Jets QB interested in joining Rams ... sorry, it’s not Mark Sanchez

Funny how things go in the NFL preseason. A starting quarterback goes down for the season and the first person everyone thinks of as a possible replacement is Mark Sanchez.

Yes, the same Mark Sanchez whose tenure with the New York Jets is better remembered for the infamous “butt fumble” than the two AFC championship games he led the team to early in his career.

But that was then and this is three weeks into the preseason, during which Sanchez has been lighting it up against mainly second-team defenses as a backup quarterback for the Philadelphia Eagles and St. Louis Rams starting quarterback Sam Bradford was lost for the season after tearing an ACL.

So, naturally, there’s been much speculation about a trade that would send Sanchez as the savior to St. Louis, even though the Rams say they’re going to stay with the guys they have and Sanchez reportedly doesn’t want to leave Philadelphia.

But just in case the folks in St. Louis decide not to stick with career backup Shaun Hill as their starter, another former Jets quarterback has offered his services. Veteran quarterback David Garrard tweeted Monday: “Would love a call from the rams!”

Garrard is 36 years old and hasn’t taken a snap in the NFL since 2010 with the Jacksonville Jaguars. He signed with the Jets last March, left two months later because of knee issues but returned in October as a backup/mentor to Geno Smith.

OK, so Garrard probably isn’t going to be anyone’s solution at starter, but the Rams very well could decide they could use a veteran backup. Might as well get his name out there first.

Can’t blame the guy for trying anyway.
