Miami Marlins star Giancarlo Stanton is expected to miss the next four to six weeks after breaking a bone in his left hand during a 7-1 loss to the Dodgers on Friday.

According to multiple reports, Stanton will undergo surgery to repair a fracture of the hamate bone. He appeared to suffer the injury on a swing during the sixth inning, telling reporters his hand was swollen after the at-bat. Stanton then grimaced after striking out to Dodgers reliever Pedro Baez in the ninth inning.

Stanton, a former multisport star at Sherman Oaks Notre Dame, finished the game 0 for 4 with three strikeouts.

“On a swing, my bat dug into my hand a little bit,” Stanton said after the game. “It didn’t feel the greatest. So just get it checked out and then know for sure what is going on.”

The Marlins confirmed the injury Saturday and placed Stanton on the 15-day disabled list. Fox Sports first reported the injury.

Stanton, who signed a 13-year, $325-million contract over the off-season, leads the majors in home runs (27) and RBIs (67). His stellar 2014 campaign was also cut short by injury when he was struck in the face with a pitch. He finished the season second in NL MVP voting to Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw.

The injury is a big blow to the Marlins, who sit 10 games behind the first-place Washington Nationals in the NL East heading into Saturday. The team, which has lost five straight to fall to 30-45, fired manager Mike Redmond last month.
