Boys’ basketball: Long Beach Poly wins double overtime thriller over Fairfax
Jackrabbits defeat Fairfax in Maranatha tourney semifinal
A semifinal game of the Maranatha tournament on Friday night between Long Beach Poly and Fairfax produced a summer basketball game to remember.
Poly pulled out a 57-55 victory in double overtime, rallying from a 10-point second-half deficit and getting three-pointers at the end of regulation from Zafir Williams and at the end of the first overtime from Reuben Williams.
Then the Jackrabbits won it at the end of the second overtime when Myles Johnson made a basket with five seconds left and Fairfax’s Lawrence McGee barely missed on a desperation shot from half court as the buzzer sounded.
Zafir Williams finished with 25 points and Drew Buggs had 14 points and 10 assists for Poly. Sophomore Jamal Hartwell had 13 points for Fairfax.
Poly will face Chino Hills in Saturday’s 8 p.m. championship game. Chino Hills defeated Compton, 79-54. LiAngelo Ball had 23 points. Lonzo Ball had 16 points, 16 rebounds, 10 assists and seven blocks.
