Julian brush fire: 100 acres burn in northeast San Diego County

A brush fire Thursday in a heavily wooded area of northeastern San Diego County has burned 100 acres and is spreading at a “moderate to rapid rate of speed,” Cal Fire said.

Called the Banner fire, the blaze broke out around at 11:30 a.m. east of Julian. Evacuations have been ordered in the Whispering Palms and Kentwood areas. Cal Fire estimated that 200 homes are threatened.

The blaze is being fought by air tankers and firefighters on the ground. An evacuation center has been set up at Julian High School.
