A fire that started in a Baldwin Hills apartment where an elderly woman was found dead early Wednesday morning appeared suspicious, a Los Angeles Fire Department official said.

The blaze began a few minutes after 2 a.m. in a two-story apartment building in the 3900 block of Ursula Avenue, said Fire Department spokesman Erik Scott.

About 40 firefighters extinguished the flames in less than 15 minutes, Scott said.

“It could’ve been much worse as far as the fire spread,” he said, adding that the fire appeared to be “suspicious” in nature.

When crews went inside the apartment, they found the woman dead, Scott said. She has not yet been identified, and officials declined to elaborate on where the body was found.
