An armed man was arrested Tuesday night following a pursuit near USC’s South Los Angeles campus that lasted more than an hour, police said.

About 6:35 p.m., officers requested backup after encountering a man -- described only as an 18- to 21-year-old -- in the 2600 block of Vermont Avenue, said Los Angeles Police Department spokesman Officer Jack Richter.

The officers confronted him but he fled, and a one-block perimeter was set up between Vermont Avenue and Ellendale Place at West Adams Boulevard, Richter said.

In a mass alert, USC warned students and community members to “stay away from area,” but shortly after 8 p.m., the university announced that it was safe to enter area.

No injuries have been reported.
