Authorities identify man who plunged from Vincent Thomas Bridge
Authorities have identified a man who jumped to his death Sunday night from the Vincent Thomas Bridge in San Pedro, but are waiting to notify his next of kin, a Los Angeles County coroner official said.
Just after 8 p.m., the man drove his car to the top of the bridge, stopped and climbed out, leaving the vehicle running with the headlights on, Port of Los Angeles spokesman Phillip Sanfield said Sunday.
The man, who was in his 40s, climbed a security fence, which is about 10 feet high, and jumped into the water below, Sanfield said.
A passenger boat retrieved the man, and rescue workers attempted CPR without success, Sanfield said. A cause of death has not been officially determined.
Traffic was temporarily suspended on the bridge after the incident.
It is the same bridge from which “Top Gun” director Tony Scott jumped to his death last August.
