LNG Terminal Off Oxnard Makes Sense
Re “An Explosive Debate Over Natural Gas,” June 25: It’s clear that many people oppose having a liquefied natural gas terminal in or next to their community. But California uses lots of natural gas, much of it for power plants to provide electricity. Because we have a growing population, and some economic growth, that means the state uses more electricity every year.
Because our state uses so much natural gas, it is fair that we provide some of the infrastructure to support our use. There is no way that alternative energy can supply all our near-term needs for more electricity.
Obviously, a terminal 14 miles offshore from Oxnard is less risky and endangers far fewer people than one in Long Beach harbor. The state’s energy needs justify siting the terminal off Oxnard. The governor is right to support that location.
